Pop Culture Last Supper

Dave MacDowell once again makes my brain hurt with his pop culture-stuffed paintings, this time a Popped Culture favourite, the Last Supper. Is that Robert Redford's The Candidate as Judas and Olivia Newton-John's Sandy as the apostle John, (or Mary Magdelene)?

The rest, from the left: Optimus Prime, Chewbacca, Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette from True Romance, Johnny Depp from 21 Jump Street, Brad Pitt from Fight Club, Andy Wharol, Cornelius from Planet of the Apes and Hong Kong Phooey. Not sure who is on the far right. Anyone?

The Depp Hatter's Tea Party

DeviantARTist memorypalace brings together six of Johnny Depp's more colourful characters (L-R: Jack Sparrow, Ed Wood, Sweeney Todd, The Mad Hatter, Willy Wonka, Edward Scissorhands). Add seven more and you've got yourself a Last Supper. Someone get on that. (Link via The Daily What)

Contest: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Popped Culture contest No. 2: On Friday, Dec. 11 American Express is hosting a gala screening of The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus in Toronto. The screening takes place two weeks before the film opens in Canadian theatres and will feature a Q&A session with director Terry Gilliam! And guess who is giving away two pairs of tickets? Me! That was obvious, wasn't it?

What: Gala screening of The Imaginarum of Dr. Parnassus
When: Friday, Dec. 11. Doors open at 6 p.m., screening starts at 7 p.m.
Where: Screening and after party will take place at The Carlu, 444 Yonge Street, Toronto

To win: First, go to www.americanexpress.ca/events and find the right phrase. Then email me (hint: it's in my profile) the phrase and either join my Facebook page, follow me on Twitter and/or vote for Popped Culture in the Canadian Blog Awards. I will enter all the correct entries into a draw on Wednesday night at 11 p.m. and let the winners know Thursday morning.

You have to be 18 or be accompanied by an adult to attend and I'm not flying anyone in so, you know, keep that in mind. No prize substitutions either.

Good luck! I can't wait to see this and a Q&A with Terry Gilliam too? Cool.

You Need To Be As Mad As A Hatter

The Alice In Wonderland trailer is dark, colourful, amazing! What what else would you expect when you mix Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and a fairytale setting? Don't take my word for it, see for yourself.

Update: Looks like Disney has pulled the trailer off the internets — only a few grainy versions remain. It must be horrible for a company to get all that free advertising and promotion. Good for them for dismissing all those fans!

Update 2: Hmm, it's back. I sure told them.

Through The Looking Glass

Ed Wood meets Raoul Duke, crossed with Edward Scissorhands and Willy Wonka. I love everything about the new images from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, especially Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter.

Burton's take picks up 10 years after Lewis Carroll's classic tale left off. Alice returns down the rabbit hole, but doesn't recall her childhood. Go to /film for more.

I don't want to have to wait nine more months to see this vision emerge!

My Name Is Depp And I Love To Get Blotto

Seeing Brad Anderson's Hollywood version of The Simpsons makes be think that maybe, just maybe a live-actio version wouldn't be horrible.

His cast so far: George Clooney as Homer; Cate Blanchett as Marge; Ewan McGregor as Bart; Resse Witherspoon as Lisa; Jennifer Aniston as Maggie; Johnny Depp as Otto; Vince Vaughn as Krusty; William H. Macey as Ned Flanders; Steve Buscemi as Moe; William Dafoe as Mr. Burns; Dustin Hoffman as Millhouse; Stephen Colbert as Mr. Smithers; and Ricky Gervais as Chief Wiggum

I think he nailed it with Depp, Buscemi and Colbert. Be sure to check out the whole cast. (Tip via Six Pix Mix)

My Little Pony Madness

In the 1980s my sister was obsessed with My Little Pony. They were candy-coloured, sparkly and everything a teenage boy wanted nothing to do with. Some people have decided to do something about this. Tiffany, this is for you...

My Little Alien: I knew there was something wrong with My Little Pony, I just didn't know it would come bursting through my chest cavity. This, and several more are from Mari Kasurinen, who has a Flickr page, a Deviant Art site and a website devoted to her custom toy creations.

My Little Edward Scissorhands: A misunderstood My Little Pony with razor-sharp blades for hooves. Marvelous! It even looks like Johnny Depp!

My Little Buckbeak: Nothing really horrifying about this custom My Little Pony, in fact the Buckbeak was a friendly to Harry Potter. I just loved the look.

My Little Han Solo: Had carbonite freezing been available in my teen years, this is how all of my sisters Ponies would have ended up.

My Little Boba Fett: If you have My Little Han Solo, you naturally have to have My Little Boba Fett. Now no more of this before George Lucas gets any ideas.

My Little Borg: If the Borg were to assimilate everything then it follows that they would assimilate My Little Pony as well. But it would be there undoing...

My Little Cthulhu: H.P. Lovecraft's embodiment of extreme horror, terror and evil, Cthulhu is a perfect candidate for a My Little Pony mod.

My Little Worf: Comes with his own bat'leth. I think Klingons would secretly love My Little Pony, just like they love prune juice — because they are both so terrible.

My Little Master Chief: The Chief isn't quite as imposing as a pony, but I'd happily stick a few plasma grenades on him, just to see what happens.

My Little Trojan Horse: Ah, the Classical Studies education pays off once more. How could the Trojan's resist bringing in something so cute? Which makes me wonder about Trojan condoms — oh sure, it's clever, there's something hidden inside! But when it gets out (and it does) it will slaughter you and burn everything you have to the ground. Hmm, guess that's why I'm not in advertising.

And for good measure, Robot Chicken's Apocalypse Ponies: Pestilence Pony, War Pony, Famine Pony, and Death Pony.

Ahoy, Bunnies!

Yo-ho-ho, just in time for the third installment of Pirates of the Caribbean, comes the 30-Second Bunnies reenactment of the previous two swashbucklers. They are both summed up in the single take for obvious reasons – it was the same movie.

Is Johnny Depp finally walking the plank with this one? Will the Hollywood rebel loose some of his cool factor by continuing to star in the franchise? It was surprising to see him come on board for a Disney movie about a theme park ride, but he turned that around so I’m not counting him out yet. Plus it has Chow Yun-Fat. Sure, he hasn’t done anything good since leaving Hong Kong (go rent Hard Boiled and see what I mean), but hopefully this one will work out.

Of course if Pirates brings in another treasure chest full of cash at the box office, we will likely see another movie rise from the briny depths in two years. As Entertainment Weekly put it: “Vowed the studio, ‘We will not stop until pirate movies suck again.’”

CelebARTy

What is it with celebrities? Aren’t they satisfied with our adoration, obsessions and money that should have been spent elsewhere? Some of them have artistic ambitions beyond their films and music.

Pop Life Art
has a huge list of celebs (actors, singers, musicians, athletes, etc.) that create fine art paintings, drawings and photographs on top of their day jobs. Below are paintings from Johnny Depp, Lucy Liu, David Bowie, Viggo Mortensen, Natalie Merchant and Pierce Brosnan, but not in that order. Care to take a stab at gussing who's who? The prize is, umm, you're a really good guesser.
