Edward Scissorhands: Delight in Paper Chains

My last posting from Gallery 1988's Crazy 4 Cult show is May Ann Licudine's Delight in Paper Chains, which is wonderfully whimsical. You can see all of May's process here and be sure to check out all the artwork at the gallery. I have found some great new artists to follow.

The Depp Hatter's Tea Party

DeviantARTist memorypalace brings together six of Johnny Depp's more colourful characters (L-R: Jack Sparrow, Ed Wood, Sweeney Todd, The Mad Hatter, Willy Wonka, Edward Scissorhands). Add seven more and you've got yourself a Last Supper. Someone get on that. (Link via The Daily What)

Rock Beats Scissors

You'd think Edward Scissorhands would know better than to play The Thing in Rock, Paper, Scissors but I guess he's kind of slow. Perhaps he should challenge Flat Stanley. (Link via Luis Angel Oropeza)

Edward Simpsonhands

And now you know what Edward Scissorhands would look like if he was on The Simpsons — from the talented Dean Fraser of Springfield Punx.

It got me wondering what sort of episode Edward would show up on. Certainly Springfield would be a fine stand in for the suburbia surrounding Edward's Gothic mansion. I could imagine somehow Homer switching his hands for Edward's scissors and constantly slashing himself and everyone around him. I'm guessing it would be a Treehouse of Horror episode.

Poor Predictable Edward, Always Chooses Scissors

Edward Scissorhands is not the best rock, paper, scissors player. But Edward can just shred the smug little grin off that kid after losing for the fifth time. From Threadless t-shirt designer chippos. You can vote for this below, which I have done after finally joining Threadless after pimping their shirts for months. (Link via Super Punch)

My Little Pony Madness

In the 1980s my sister was obsessed with My Little Pony. They were candy-coloured, sparkly and everything a teenage boy wanted nothing to do with. Some people have decided to do something about this. Tiffany, this is for you...

My Little Alien: I knew there was something wrong with My Little Pony, I just didn't know it would come bursting through my chest cavity. This, and several more are from Mari Kasurinen, who has a Flickr page, a Deviant Art site and a website devoted to her custom toy creations.

My Little Edward Scissorhands: A misunderstood My Little Pony with razor-sharp blades for hooves. Marvelous! It even looks like Johnny Depp!

My Little Buckbeak: Nothing really horrifying about this custom My Little Pony, in fact the Buckbeak was a friendly to Harry Potter. I just loved the look.

My Little Han Solo: Had carbonite freezing been available in my teen years, this is how all of my sisters Ponies would have ended up.

My Little Boba Fett: If you have My Little Han Solo, you naturally have to have My Little Boba Fett. Now no more of this before George Lucas gets any ideas.

My Little Borg: If the Borg were to assimilate everything then it follows that they would assimilate My Little Pony as well. But it would be there undoing...

My Little Cthulhu: H.P. Lovecraft's embodiment of extreme horror, terror and evil, Cthulhu is a perfect candidate for a My Little Pony mod.

My Little Worf: Comes with his own bat'leth. I think Klingons would secretly love My Little Pony, just like they love prune juice — because they are both so terrible.

My Little Master Chief: The Chief isn't quite as imposing as a pony, but I'd happily stick a few plasma grenades on him, just to see what happens.

My Little Trojan Horse: Ah, the Classical Studies education pays off once more. How could the Trojan's resist bringing in something so cute? Which makes me wonder about Trojan condoms — oh sure, it's clever, there's something hidden inside! But when it gets out (and it does) it will slaughter you and burn everything you have to the ground. Hmm, guess that's why I'm not in advertising.

And for good measure, Robot Chicken's Apocalypse Ponies: Pestilence Pony, War Pony, Famine Pony, and Death Pony.

Dancing With Scissors

I like musicals. That is to say I don’t think they are the most annoying form of entertainment created by humans. No, wait, I’m equivocating again. I’ve actually seen more singing and dancing than I’ve ever acknowledged and I’ve been known to enjoy it.

In high school I saw both Cats and the Phantom of the Opera caterwaul. While in New York a couple of years ago we did the whole Broadway experience at Avenue Q (20-something, foul-mouthed, underemployed puppets, what’s not to love?) Here in Toronto we’ve completed the circle of life at The Lion King; we could not resist Mamma Mia; Wicked was, well, wicked; and most recently we saw The Lord of the Rings before it met a fiery death in the reviews of Mordor. If anyone else told me that list I’d say they like musicals, so there it is.

So when I got an email about a musical production of Edward Scissorhands coming to Toronto I was intrigued. The classic tale of a misunderstood loner trying to fit into a candy-coated version of ‘50s suburbia is one of director Tim Burton’s best. In the film Johnny Depp was superb as the terrified yet curious boy with scissors for hands and Winona Ryder was still in that cute stage before everyone realized she couldn’t act. Many of Burton’s films appear ideal for adaptation to the stage – The Corpse Bride was essentially a musical and both Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Beetle Juice would also make for colourful show.

But I get ahead of myself. This version is based on Burton’s film but leaves the dialogue behind, choosing instead to interpret the work with dancing topiary, Christian Goths and a cast of 30 dancers. It’s just weird enough to work.

Interested? It’s playing for just three nights - Wednesday, April 4 through Friday, April 6 at 8 PM at the Hummingbird Centre. Login to Ticketmaster.ca with the promotional code EDBLOG to receive a $15 discount off any seat or price range – online sales only. Or check out the official site.
