Famous Twins, In Vivo

A collection of famous fictional twins as they may have looked in the womb. I can only imagine that babies being born with weapons and clothing would be a little disturbing. (Film Twins by Mr. Whaite, via That Geek Lover)

I Know Lego Kung Fu

Lego Matrix

Forget Bullet Time, now there is Lego Time, or at least the Lego version of the Bullet Time dodge scene from The Matrix. The difference between the two (other than the use of Lego) is the amount of time to film it — 440 hours in this case.

In every other respect, it is an exact replica of the scene, which their side-by-side comparison. If anything the Neo Lego Miniman may have been slightly more expressive than Keanu Reeves.

Geeks really do make the best fans, and these guys embrace it. From their FAQ:
Q. You guys have too much free time.
A. This is not a question. However, we do hear this a lot. All you have to do is borrow some of the time that would otherwise be spent sleeping.
I hear that. (Link via Neatorama)

Matrix: The Silent Movie

Silent Era Matrix

Charlie Chaplin is The One in this Russian comedy troupe's silent film version of The Matrix. If you can't handle the six plus minutes (which is admittedly long for you web-addled monkeys) skip to about 5:30 and watch the Cream Pie Time filming technique, which was the cutting edge of 1920s film. (Link via Neatorama and spreading like wildfire, so don't get left out!)

Inappropriate Soundtracks: Carpenters Vs. The Matrix

Even with Top Of The World playing, this scene is awesome. And I have no doubt in my mind that this is exactly what Keanu Reeves has playing in his head all the time.
I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around
Your love's put me at the top of the world
Inappropriate Soundtracks, according to mashup creator Boonehams, take a scene from a movie, change its background music to something wildly inappropriate and thus, ruin that scene. And there are a lot of them, almost 50. Be sure to check out Reservoir Dogs Vs. Wham. (Link via Buzzfeed)

Bad Commercials Are Good For You

"Commercials make TV programs more enjoyable to watch. Even bad commercials,” says Leif Nelson, an assistant professor of marketing at the University of California, San Diego, and a co-author of Don’t Touch That Dial! Watching Commercials Leads to Greater Enjoyment of TV Programs.

The psych prof showed an episode of Taxi to students with ads and another group saw it without. The group who watched the show with the commercials rated the show much more favourably, even while stating they didn't like the ads.

We adapt quickly to pleasurable experiences, says Dr. Nelson, and our enjoyment quickly tapers off. "Each successive minute is slightly less enjoyable than the previous one," he says. So a break - even it involves a strange man hawking a yellow cloth - makes the experience novel again.

This, of course, means two things. I should periodically hit my hand with a hammer just to make everything else I am doing seem that much more pleasurable. Secondly, Dr. Nelson is Agent Smith and the Matrix is upon us.
Agent Smith: Did you know that the first Matrix was designed to be a perfect human world? Where none suffered, where everyone would be... happy. It was a disaster. No one would accept the program, entire crops were lost.

Some believed that we lacked the programming language to describe your perfect world. But I belive, that as a species, human beings define their reality though suffering and misery.
Of course some ads can be quite enjoyable, like this Bud Lite spot that bizarrely compares its customers to porn addicts. (Link via Listicles)

If the Shoe-icide Bomber Fits...

Before the first shoe hit the floor, netizens began work on parodies of George W. Bush's dodging of an Iraqi journalist's footwear. The raw footage itself has been viewed millions of times on YouTube alone and on countless other news sites worldwide.

Several web-based games have already appeared, where you can either toss shoes at President Bush — who pops up and down like a Wack-A-Mole (Sock and Awe), take the role of the shoe-dodging Dubya and see how long you can avoid getting smacked in the noggin (Flying Babush), or play one of his beleaguered Secret Service detail and try and shoot the shoes before they reach their target (Bush's Boot Camp).

Would-be humorists have been hard at work mashing up the footage into their own videos, the most popular subjects being Dodgeball, the Three Stooges, the Matrix and Austin Powers — the last time anyone can recall a shoe being used as a projectile weapon.

While TV reporter Muntazer al-Zaidi has became an instant sensation in the Arab world as well, Iraqi officials have not taken the incident lightly. Zaidi appeared before a judge on Tuesday and admitted “aggression against a president”, a judicial spokesman told Agence France-Presse, and he could be facing up to 15 years in jail.
Zaidi’s brother said on Tuesday that the reporter was hit on the head with a rifle butt and had an arm broken in the chaos that broke out after he threw his shoes at Bush and was leapt on by Iraqi security officers and U.S. secret service agents.

Zaidi is in a hospital in the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad, his brother Maitham al-Zaidi said.

“All that we know is we were contacted yesterday by a person — we know him — and he told us that Muntazer was taken on Sunday to Ibn-Sina hospital,” Maitham al-Zaidi said. “He was wounded in the head because he was hit by a rifle butt, and one of his arms was broken."
From National Post's Posted blog, where I got to pass this off as work today. I love my job.

It's Not Easy Being Green

“Soon after the death of Jim Henson, Kermit the Frog turned to a life full of drugs, alcohol and sex. His fall to rock bottom was quick and unrelenting.” This is the opening on the site sadkermit.com, which documents our favourite frog’s downward spiral. What led me there was Kermie’s gut wrenching cover of Hurt, which is almost too painful to watch. Is it a cover of the original Nine Inch Nails song or of Johnny Cash’s brilliant version? I think Kermit draws from both and makes the song his own. If this is what’s happened to our little felt friend, he has gone to a very dark place.

After emerging from the depths of Kermit’s pain I needed to get the image of what he was doing to Rowlf out of my mind and decided to go looking for some more Muppet mashups. After taking the red pill I came across the Muppet Matrix, a computer animated version of the Matrix trailer, using an all-Muppet cast. Kermit is Neo, Rowlf is Morpheus, Miss Piggy is Trinity and Gonzo is Smith. Great stuff and it’s well worth waiting for the ending.
