Calvin, Hobbes, Terminator

"Johnny and Uncle Bob is a syndicated daily comic strip that was written and illustrated by American cartoonist James Cameron, and syndicated from October 26, 1984 to August 29, 1997. It follows the humorous antics of John, a foul mouthed six-year-old boy messiah, and Uncle Bob, his stoic robot friend." (Johnny and Uncle Bob by ninjaink)

Cowboys, Tigers and Bears

"How it would be before the popular children's books, movies and comic strips. Before the Andy, Calvin and Christopher Robins. Were these guys just three dudes that hung out and caused trouble."

kizer180 shows us what that might have looked like. Seems like Hobbes is the only one who kept his troublemaking nature.

Calvin, Hobbes And The Masters of the Universe

By the Power of Grayskull, I have transmogrified! I'm a sucker for a Calvin and Hobbes parody and I think Hobbes would make a fine Battle Cat.

Joker And Lex Luthor Vs. Calvin And Hobbes

A homage to Bill Waterson's Calvin and Hobbes from comic artists Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo in Superman/Batman #75. Much like Calvin doesn't see the brilliance of Hobbes' suggestions, Luthor just doesn't get the Joker. Heaven help us if either of them got ahold of a Transmogrifier. The Kessel Run: Han and Chewie never said *when* they did it. Pop artist James Hance is proposing making this (which is just 'a doodle') a twice-weekly comic.

Please tell him you want to see this - I need it.

Garfield Meets Calvin and Hobbes

"These two cartoons were samples I had planned to submit to MAD magazine, around the mid 1990s I think...the joke was, "What if older features tried to copy the success of Calvin & Hobbes?" It was more relevant at the time, of course."

Cartoonist Doug Gray revives a great feature from Calvin & Hobbes for use in some comics that are a little long in the tooth. See his take on Peanuts too. (Link via @weinmanj)

Dynamic Duo: Calvin and Hobbes

Because they are the imaginary friends we deserve, and the ones we need right now. (From Kyle Latino, which it took me ages to discover after falling down the Tumblr hole of no credits. But thanks to Blackadder for surfacing it.)

Cthulhu And Hobbes

The seas are just packed! Hobbes is clearly Cthulhu here, but no matter — funny is funny.  (Link via TopatoCo)

"Two best ol' buddies, Cthulhu and a Deep One, go adventuring in the crazy world above sea level. Will they find pirate treasure? Icky girls? A tenebrous, unwaking eikon in whose unfathomable presence time and reason lay abrogate? (The answer is icky girls."

If You Go Down In The Woods Today...

The Hundred Acre Wood is not as friendly as it is made out to be. Seems Winnie the Pooh and the gang are about to show Calvin & Hobbes exactly how unfriendly. Calvin and Hobbes and Pooh Bear, Oh My!

While Christopher Robin has clearly been feeding Winnie the Pooh steroid-laced honey, ultimately he is still a bear of very little brain and the pair won't be able to stand up against the ferocity and imagination of Calvin and Hobbes. (weremagnus' Schoolyard Takedown via The Daily What)

Calvin and Hobbes Garbage Pail Kids

After years of nobody ever believing that Hobbes was a real tiger, Calvin finally went insane. Certifiable Calvin from Brent Engstrom, via Super Punch.

If that seems practically sacrilegious to the memory of Bill Watterson's characters, the reclusive comic strip creator did his first (brief) interview in over 20 years with the Clevland Plain Dealer. From the exchange:
With almost 15 years of separation and reflection, what do you think it was about "Calvin and Hobbes" that went beyond just capturing readers' attention, but their hearts as well?

"The only part I understand is what went into the creation of the strip. What readers take away from it is up to them. Once the strip is published, readers bring their own experiences to it, and the work takes on a life of its own. Everyone responds differently to different parts.
I just tried to write honestly, and I tried to make this little world fun to look at, so people would take the time to read it. That was the full extent of my concern. You mix a bunch of ingredients, and once in a great while, chemistry happens. I can't explain why the strip caught on the way it did, and I don't think I could ever duplicate it. A lot of things have to go right all at once."
It really was a remarkable strip and it's nice to have a small reminder of that time.

Weirdos From Another Planet!

Long gone from the comic page, Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes still manages to inspire other artists. At the Crazy For Cult show earlier this year, pop artist Sean Clarity submitted Jack's Imaginary Friend as a visual representation of Galvin P. Chow's theory that Fight Club is Calvin and Hobbes, but grown up:
"Just as Calvin has an imaginary jungle-animal friend named Hobbes, whom everyone else believes to be nothing but a stuffed toy, "Jack" in Fight Club has an imaginary cool-guy friend named Tyler, whom no one but Jack can see."
I went back and found all of that after seeing the results of Comics Alliance's call out to comic book artists to reinterpret the iconic strip. (Link via Neatorama)

Calvin and Hobbes, if Calvin was a six-year-old and Hobbes was a real tiger. Wait... he wasn't?

From pop artist Casey Weldon for a show at Gallery 1998, they of the cool Idiot Box exhibit I've been enjoying so much. Thanks to Super Punch for another great find.

Is it wrong that this just makes me want to go out for Eggs Benedict? Gotta love a Calvin & Hobbes-inspired yoke - thanks to Ariel Bariel Long for the eggcellent work.
