Holy Gender Bender, Superhero!

What would male superheroes look like as women? Surprisingly well-endowed. I'd like to imagine that this is a feminist rethink but its most likely a reason to draw humongous breasts.

She-Man is an unfortunate name choice here for what else it implies. Hmm, actually it seems possible.

Ok, they aren't superheroes per se, but I couldn't resist a feminized version of Asterix and Obelix. I think I saw Obelix in Florida. (Link via BuzzFeed, which has a dozen more.)

He-Man And The Masters of Their Own Domain

Gallery 1988's latest exhibit, titled "Under the Influence: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe," actually makes me interested in watching the '80s cartoon again and I really didn't think much of it the first time around.

I'm impressed that Mattel, who partnered with the gallery, was open to letting artists reinterpret the cartoon. More companies should be that creative, even if it means showing how Skeletor makes money on the side. (Above, Johnny Sampson's "Cosmo Skeletor")

What does He-Man need of a Battlecat when you he ride a fabulous My Little Pony? Pop artist Sam Carter has mashed together these two solitudes of kids cartoons (and product lines if we are to be honest) into one gender-bending super toy.

I was never much of a Masters of the Universe fan but my sister was crazy for the Ponies. Despite my lackluster interest, He-Man appears to be having a pop culture revival. Gallery 1988 will be presenting Under The Influence: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe next month and you can see many of artists entries at Super Punch.

Jokeback Mountain

“I wish I knew how to quit you,” has become the new “Not that there’s anything wrong with that.” Brokeback Mountain jokes have opened up a whole world of gay jokes as the film continues its roll towards an inevitable Oscar win.

The jokes don’t really do much for me, but there is an offshoot that I enjoy: movie parodies. Its interesting to watch when a piece of entertainment enters into the wider realm of pop culture and people take ownership of it.

I think it is also part of the mashup phenomenon, where two or more disparate elements are mixed together to create a new work, like the Grayskull Mountain poster to the right. Take one part cheesy ‘80s cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (and its ripe for parody title), add in the zeitgeist film of the moment, mix with Photoshop and voila!

The spoofs are rolling in and I’m sure more are on the way. The gay subtext of Top Gun has longed been hinted at and Quentin Tarantino said as much in his monologue in Sleep With Me. So Bareback Top Gun comes as no surprise.

There is also a great trailer for another love that could never be – that of Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown in Brokeback to the Future.

And for those techie geeks, there is the short but sweet Broke Mac Mountain, which I probably enjoy more than I should.
