This is but a small sampling of the awesome, updated Map of Online Communities by xkcd. The first one was in 2008 and you can see how much the land of MySpace has shrunk in two years. I also enjoyed Kanye's Island of Sadness and the Hastag Games Whose Popularity Confuses and Depresses You. Bonus: Neatorama got its own island! (Thanks to @benelling for the heads up)

On the off-hand chance you haven't already seen this video everywhere — and with 10K Diggs and most major sites posting it, that's unlikely — here's We Didn't Start the Flame War from College Humor.

What I love about it is how culturally specific it is and it makes me realize there is a genuine, if sad, subculture at play here. But if you don't spend any time on major commenting sites, it will be entirely meaningless to you. My wife watched it and shrugged, as I suspected.

A map of online communities (click on the map for a larger version) and social networking from the web comic xkcd. It's from last year (so of course I'm only seeing it now) and already some of the lands should be resized (up Facebook, down MySpace) and a new island of lolcats is probably required, but other than that its incredibly detailed and funny.

Strange Maps, where I origianlly came across this clever piece of cartography, has a version with a slew of comments explaining some of the more obscure terrirtories. And I'm off to sail the Sea of Memes on my way to the Ocean of Subculture.
