Well Done, Good & Faithful Servant

On Saturday morning, heaven gained a stubborn soul. Three weeks after he was "supposed" to die, my Pappap finally said "Ok, I'm ready."

Their love was like that out of a story book. They met on a Greyhound bus bound for Pennsylvania. She played hard to get, but he got her. And their love grew over  60-some years (as my grandma said to me yesterday). And their family grew too. Six children, 27 grand-children, 16 great-grandchildren.

He was a Sicilian, a Merchant Marine, a ball player, a wallpaper hanger, a husband, father, grandfather. He taught us to respect our parents, work hard, and appreciate a good Italian olive. No boy we liked earned the title 'boyfriend' until he'd met Pappap and got the approval, which was a squeeze of the hand and a wink.

I remember when I was 15 years old, I got a second hole pierced in my ears. I went over to my grandparents' house sometime afterwards and he immediately said to me, "What are you doing with all that metal in your ears??" I desperately tried to argue my point and convince him that it was cool to have four earrings in my ears. But there was no convincing Pappap of anything if he didn't want to be convinced. He would often say that if any grandkids showed up to the house with a tattoo, he'd scrub it off himself.

Never again did I wear four earrings to Grandma and Pappap's house.

And two weeks ago, I was sitting at the kitchen table with my Pappap and cousin, Katherine. Katherine asked me, "hey, do you have an extra hole in yours ears?" With Pappap sitting right there, I tried to squelch the conversation about controversial piercings. Even so close to death, I was afraid he'd wollop me!

Pappap was a strong man, a stubborn one, a gruff one at times. But boy, could he love. When we were kids, he would grab us as we were walking by and hold on tight. That man had the tightest grip. He would squeeze us hard, and we'd squirm and try to get away but never once could I get out of that strong grip. All he wanted was a kiss, and as soon as we gave up and kissed him on the cheek, we were free to go.

He was the pillar of our family and I can't imagine a gathering without him sitting at the head of the table, watching, listening and soaking in his beautiful family. He lived a hard, beautiful, full life and there is no doubt that when he finally arrived in heaven, he heard the words "Well done, my good and faithful servant" from his Jesus. And then I bet he challenged Jesus to a card game.

One blog post can't begin to touch on the life of a man like my Pappap. And I feel like this post is entirely inadequate. We are missing him terribly this week and our hearts are aching. It's so tough for me to be here in Hawaii, alone, when my heart is with my family in Maryland. But in spite of the tears and the sadness, there is great joy. We rejoice that he is home with Jesus. His body is whole and healthy and he knows nothing but joy. Like my dad said the night I said a tearful goodbye to Pappap a few weeks ago, "Our hope of heaven is his reality". And we have this promise...

"He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." Revelation 21:4

Colorful Skirts & Beautiful Sisters.

My sisters and I threw a baby shower for our sister-in-love, Melinda last week. It was so fun to celebrate Luke and Melinda's little "Sidekick", as they call him/her!

I wore my very favorite skirt. It's so colorful and makes me instantly happy when I wear it. Plus... it's got pockets!!

I know I posted this photo last week, but I wanted to share it again. I love my sisters. These women are so beautiful, inside and out. They are nurturing, creative and caring. They are deep and loving and I am so thankful for each one.

Do you have sisters? Are you close to them? I think I'd be dubbed the "crazy one" in the group (as evidenced by the above photo!) There's always gotta be one, right?

Happy Wednesday, dear friends!

My Neck is Warm & My Heart is Full.

Not sure if you guys are enjoying these outfit posts or not, but I've got another one for you today, so too bad! :) I'm thinking of continuing them in Hawaii to make myself wear something more than just a tank and shorts everyday. What do you think of that?

And because my heart is in Maryland with my family as I fly home to Hawaii today, I've got to share some more pictures from the last week. I spent almost every night at my grandparents' as all 26 grandchildren flew in from all over the country to spend time with my Papap. It was a sweet time together and it broke my heart to say goodbye.

And just to give you an idea of the crowd this week. My little sister in the blue shirt has the coveted seat next to my Papap, covering his hands with her warm hands as the flurry of activity and laughter swirls around them.

I got to see my little brother, Adam, this weekend...

... and it's not a visit with my brothers unless there's some wrestling move pulled at least once.

We made a gigantic apple crisp on Saturday and it was gobbled up within minutes. Mmmm... so good.

I hope your weekend filled your heart with goodness like mine did. I have to say that while I'm excited to get home to my life in Hawaii and get back to painting in my studio, it's going to be very hard to be so alone in my house and away from family after this beautiful week.

And dear friends, thank you for all the prayers for my family and my Papap. He is still sharp, witty and holding onto this world with that stubborn grip of his. It was the best gift I could ask for to have that time with him this week.

Have a sweet Monday!

It Is Well With My Soul.

This has been a sweet, sweet week visiting with my family.

Got to grab coffee with my mom in downtown Annapolis and browse through our favorite pottery shop together.

Apparently as the family artist, I am a cake decorator too. I made a "Skippy Doo" (also known as Scooby Doo) cake for my niece's 5th birthday.

Kicked my nephew's butt at Wii bowling.

Got lots of hugs from my Grandma and gave lots of kisses to my niece and namesake, Sofia Lindsay.

Threw my sister-in-love a baby shower with all my other sisters and sister-in-loves.

Hugged on these sweet nieces over the weekend.

And most importantly, spent lots of time with this man. My grandpa, my Papap, spent the week in the hospital and was sent home on Wednesday with hospice care. Family from all over the country is flying in. Each night since he's been home, a crowd has gathered in their kitchen, eating home cooked Italian foods, laughing, loving, sharing memories and celebrating life.

I can't begin to explain how thankful I am to be here this week, holding his hand, relishing his smiles and soaking in family time. God's timing is so providential.

We are going to miss him and our hearts are heavy thinking about losing him, but there is joy. Sweet joy.

We know that he loves Jesus and that this is not the end, but merely the beginning. He will have a whole body, free from sickness and weakness. And so we rest in the peace that salvation brings, knowing we will see my sweet Papap again soon.

But he's not gone yet. He's a stubborn man and continues to surprise us with his wit, sharpness and ever steady grip- on our hands, hearts and on life.

I pray that the peace our Father provides fills you this weekend and you are able to find joy in each moment!

The Wilkins Come to Visit

We had a great time hosting Chris' family over Thanksgiving two weeks ago. Our tiny house was bursting at the seams with 8 people, including our 21 month old niece, Lucy. Lots of fun and chaos to be had! Here are some pictures from the week, mostly all taken on Beth's camera since mine was kaput.

We spent Thursday cooking, obviously.

We did some hikes. Lucy was a good hiking buddy.

The boys did Stairway to Heaven. Some 2,000 steps leading up to an old Navy satellite. Ridiculous views. I'm glad they're still alive. I have no desire to ever do this hike.

Lots of fun playing with sweet Lucy.

On the East side of the island, where a lot of LOST filming took place. We're standing in the area I saw the last episode being filmed--you know the fight between Locke and Jack? Yeah, that scene.

Of course, shave ice and silliness.

Had to get some surfing in.

We rented a pontoon boat one day and went out to Kaneohe Bay where there is a mile long sandbar. Picturesque perfection.

After a dawn patrol surf session on the North Shore the last morning, we spotted about a dozen turtles 'surfing' the waves right on the shore. Chris and his brother Bryce waded out to see them better. That, and a full double rainbow was the perfect ending to their visit! (This photo was taken with my phone--pretty impressive for a phone pic right??)

Have you had family visit lately? Are you going home for Christmas? We are staying here, which I'm actually pretty sad about. I could really go for some time with my side of the fam and some snow too!
