By Bill Theobald • Tennessean • August 18, 2009
A captain with the 101st Airborne Division has been indicted on charges of taking tens of thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange for steering business to two contractors while serving as a procurement officer in Iraq, the U.S. attorney's office in the southern district of New York announced Monday.
Capt. Bryant Williams, 38, of Clarksville, Tenn., was charged with one count of fraud and one count of bribery. He surrendered to authorities in Manhattan and was to be arraigned in federal court later in the day.
Starting in October 2005, the indictment says, he asked two contractors — not identified in the indictment — to pay him a percentage of the contracts they received.When the two received contracts through other procurement officers, Williams brandished his firearm and threatened them with "physical injury," the indictment alleges. {more}
